Plurality of Leadership Model

2023-2024

WE ARE ELDER-GOVERNED, STAFF-LED & MEMBER-EMPOWERED. Leaders in God’s Kingdom are called to be different from leaders in the world. Jesus taught and modeled a leadership that was rooted in love, sacrifice, and servanthood. Leadership in the church must follow his example.

JESUS CHRIST
Jesus Christ is the head of the Church, which is his body. The Bible makes clear that elders are to be appointed to oversee each local expression of the Church. These elders are directly accountable to God.

ELDERS
The e
lders are the final human responsibility and authority for the governance, mission, vision, and health of Fellowship Dallas. Currently, the board of elders is comprised of seven men who are serving three-year terms with encouragement to serve a second consecutive three-year term. The board is led by a chairman and a vice-chairman.

TEACHING/PREACHING MINISTRY
The elders directly oversee the Teaching/Preaching Ministry of Fellowship Dallas, which is led by Dr. Tim Robinson, a full-time professor at Dallas Theological Seminary, who is serving as our Teaching Team Leader in a part-time, non-staff role.

SENIOR LEADERSHIP TEAM
Leadership of all other ministries, operations, and staff of the church is delegated by the board to the
Senior Leadership Team, which is comprised of the chairman and vice-chairman of the elder board and three full-time paid staff.

Joel Dow

Chairman

Rob Langworthy

Interim Vice-Chairman

Kelly Hornsby

Discipleship Pastor

Caleb Panter

Vision & Development Pastor

Tommy Shelton

Operations Pastor

Joel and Rob co-lead the Senior Leadership Team—making sure it functions consistent with the DNA and underpinnings that are foundational to Fellowship Dallas. They oversee and supervise the three staff members on the team in their areas of oversight and responsibility.

Consistent with the plurality of leadership model that Fellowship Dallas has adopted, Caleb, Kelly, and Tommy work collaboratively to lead the staff and departmental teams day-to-day. Each of them has primary responsibility for certain areas and functions based on their gifting and experience.

Vision & Development Pastor
Caleb is responsible for making sure that:

  • A clear and compelling vision is in place at Fellowship and effectively communicated, understood, and implemented. The vision itself is discerned from God by the elder board in collaboration with key staff and non-staff leaders.
  • A disciple-making strategy is designed and implemented for the development of the people of Fellowship, including the discovery and pursuit of their God-given purpose—in both its common and unique expressions—and a leadership development pipeline for those with leadership potential. This responsibility includes the personal and professional development of staff.
  • New opportunities and challenges arising from the ever-changing times and culture in which we live are recognized, explored, and addressed in ways that further Fellowship’s mission, vision, and impact.

Caleb also leads the Worship Experience Team and the Creative Ministries Team.

Discipleship Pastor
Kelly is responsible for leading all the other disciple-making ministries at Fellowship Dallas through teams of gifted and passionate staff members and volunteers. These include:

  • Kids, Students & Family Discipleship Ministries
  • Life Groups
  • Men’s & Women’s
  • Young Adults
  • Training Experiences
  • Connecting
  • Hospitality
  • Care & Recovery
  • Serving & Local Outreach

In her leadership of these ministries, Kelly collaborates on discipleship design and leads the cross-ministry integration and implementation of Fellowship’s mission, vision, and disciple-making strategy.

Operations Pastor
Tommy is responsible for leading the administrative operations of the church that work across and support all ministry areas. Each of these is led by experienced and hard-working staff, including:

  • Finance & Accounting
  • Human Resources
  • Facilities
  • IT & Strategic Systems

Because of his experience in the field, Tommy also supervises our Global Outreach Director.

MINISTRY LEADERSHIP TEAMS
Rounding out Fellowship’s leadership structure are
Ministry Leadership Teams comprised primarily of non-staff members of the church who have the time, talent, and passion to help lead a given ministry, operation, or special project. Some ministry areas already have such teams in place—for example, Life Group Coaches Team, Young Adults Leadership Team, Women’s Leadership Team, and Men’s Leadership Team. Typically, a staff leader or elder oversees each of these teams to ensure they work in harmony with whatever staff leadership is in place for a given area. The elders and staff are committed to developing more Ministry Leadership Teams so more people can live out their calling with more purpose, reward, and joy.

On all levels of leadership, we strive to lead as Jesus Christ himself led—in love, humility, obedience to the Father, and empowered by the Spirit. It is an exciting and important time to be leading at Fellowship Dallas! If you have questions or are interested in learning more about opportunities, please let us know by filling out the Ministry Leadership Teams Interest Form.

*ADVISORY BOARD
The elder board is continuing to explore the possibility of a church-member Advisory Board. This group would not serve in any oversight capacity but would be a group the elders engage for additional insight and input. We will share more details in the future. Right now the elders are learning more about how this group might function at Fellowship.

2023-2024 Budget

We’ve built our 2023-2024 budget based on the actual giving history over the past 12 months. Last year’s budget was 4MM, this year’s budget is 3.016MM The pie chart below shows how the budget is distributed between the various departments.

2023-2024 BUDGET BY DEPARTMENT

OPTIMIZING OUR STAFF SIZE
One of the key measures we’ve taken to optimize the budget based on our current church size is a reduction in staff roles. From June of 2022 to present day we have moved from 38 paid staff to 28 paid staff and 2 unpaid staff, primarily through not back-filling departures. No additional staff reductions planned. However, because we have reduced our paid staff size, there is a greater need for volunteer mobilization within our body—both in regular volunteer roles and in our new Ministry Leadership Teams.

Giving Updates

As of September 15, 2023

Our monthly giving goal for 2023-2024 is $251,333. As of September 15, we are on track with $622,903 in giving so far this year. We hope to continue on this positive trend and also expect to have additional income via auxiliary sources, facility rentals, and interest. Below are several simple ways you can help.

SIMPLE WAYS YOU CAN HELP

Use ACH or debit card for giving

By using a checking/savings account or a debit card for your giving, we can significantly cut down on credit card fees we pay in our giving portal. PushPay makes it easy to give directly from your preferred banking account and is a safe and secure way to give online.

Set up recurring giving

Consider stepping into a regular rhythm of generosity. Recurring giving helps our leadership more accurately forecast and budget throughout the year, allowing us to make adjustments as needed. In PushPay you can select your preferred giving schedule and make changes at any time.

Share your input

Talking about giving doesn’t have to be awkward. Generosity is a journey and our elders would love to meet with you one-on-one or with your Life Group to discuss Biblical principles of giving and to hear your thoughts, concerns, and questions.
